All the diverse ingredients that make up the nationally important Sussex coastline will be celebrated at Seven Sisters Country Park on Sunday (24) in a special educational and fun day for all the family.
The “Celebrating the Sussex Coast” event has been organised by South Downs Joint Committee (SDJC), Sussex Wildlife Trust and the East Sussex Coastal Biodiversity Project and will take place at the park from 11am-4pm.
Entrance is free to the activities and families will be able to follow a special “Charlie the Crab” trail to the beach. There will be an opportunity to ‘spy' on some of the underwater creatures which can be seen displayed in a rock pool ‘tank' at the back of the beach. Children can make beach and seashore pictures and badges or even fish mobiles, rock pool bottles, scallop shell lights and egg carton anemones! The craft activities will all take place in the Pump Barn next to the Visitor Centre
There will also be three guided walks to choose from – Birds of the Sussex Coast and History of the Local Area between 2pm and 4pm and Bellflowers and Bedstraw (a walk amongst downland flowers) between 2.30pm and 4pm. A “Birds of the Sussex Coast” complementary slide show will be screened in the Turkey Barn at 11.30am.
Dr Kate Cole, Coastal Biodiversity Officer for East Sussex County Council says: “The coast is one of the best loved features of Sussex, but is also one of the most threatened and least understood. That makes it all the more important for us to appreciate its value and work together to protect it for future generations to enjoy. Events such as this one raise the profile of the coast – and we have some fun into the bargain too!”
